Winnaars! / Winners!

Zondagochtend 7 uur. In de koelte van de ochtend komen we met al onze Home Coming kinderen aan op de “Run for Fun”-wedstrijd van Kids of Africa.
Gehuld in onze knaloranje Foodstep t-shirt hebben we best veel bekijks. De 5 kilometer waar onze kids aan deelnemen, is keurig uitgestippeld over de zandwegen in de buurt.
Het startschot valt. Als “moeder” best spannend om te supporteren voor ieder kind. Kunnen ze het wel aan? Hebben ze wel voldoende gedronken?
Hanna loopt het liefst op sokken, schoenen vindt ze maar niets!
Na 25:08 komt er iemand aangelopen als een hinde. Ik herken de oranje kleur van ver. Mensen gaan opzij. Samen met 5 pezige mannen die dit duidelijk meer gedaan hebben. Flora?! Is dit onze Flora?!
Ja!! Ik roep de longen uit mijn lijf zodat ze in de laatste 100 meter best nog 2 mannen kan verslaan. Wauw, wat een griet!!
Even later loopt ook de rest van onze kids over de finish lijn. De bevolking beseft ondertussen dat Foodstep hier duidelijk als winnaars zal uitkomen.
En dat bleek ook.
Flora krijgt goud, als eerste vrouw en eerste in haar leeftijdsgroep.
Derrick ook goud, als eerste in zijn leeftijdsgroep.
Ivan zilver en Emma brons, tweede en derde in hun leeftijdsgroep.
De rest van on ze atleten krijgen een certificaat, maar iedereen deed uitmuitend zijn best.
En ik... ik ben maar zelden zo trots geweest. En het hele dorp weet het nu: die van Foodstep....dat zijn winnaars!

It is Sunday morning, 7 o’clock. In the morning coolness we arrive with all our Home Coming children at the “Run for Fun”-competition of Kids of Africa.
Dressed in our bright orange Foodstep t-shirt we get quite some attention. The 5 kilometer, to which our children participate, is nicely marked out on the sand roads.
The race has started. As “mother” it is quite exciting to support every child. Can they manage? Did they drink enough water?
Hanna prefers to do the run on socks, she doesn’t like the shoes!
After 25:08 somebody is approaching the finish line, running like a hind. I recognize the orange color from far. People make way. Together with 5 strong men who obviously have done this more often. Flora?! Is this our Flora?! Yes!! I shout at the top of my voice so she easily beats another 2 men in the last 100 meter. Wow, what a girl!!
Shortly after also the other children cross the finish line. Meanwhile the community has realized that Foodstep will be the winners.
And so it happened.
Flora got gold, being the first woman and the first in her age group.
Derrick also got gold, being the first in his age group.
Ivan silver and Emma bronze; second and third in their age group.
The rest of our athletes got a certificate, but everybody did their utmost best.
And I…. seldom have I been so proud. And the whole village knows it now: Foodstep….those are winners!
